Tips to make your living space feel larger
“Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling.” ~ Anonymous

In many respects apartment living is the best situation for many, you are not tied down to a mortgage, you are able to choose the ideal location with compromising, there isn’t a hassle with parking, and you are secure. Whether you plan to permanently live in an apartment or are just taking up residency short-term creating a space you are proud of is important.

Luckily your living space doesn’t have to be a mansion for it to feel spacious, if you have a smaller living area there are simple ways to visually increase the size of your room by strategically placing furniture or using your decor to your advantage. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Light colors
Light colors reflect light and thus make any space feel larger. If your walls are light-colored add decor that enhances the light and airy feeling such as area rugs, art, furniture, and like-toned pieces of art on the wall. The great thing about decorating in lighter colors is the flexibility to add pops of color throughout your space.

The rule of 3
Experts agree sticking to the rule of 3 will make your space feel larger. In simple terms, interior designers suggest objects look best in a group of three. While the objects can be different sizes (think candlesticks or vases of various heights) the groupings look more appealing in groups of three. The same guideline can be applied toward lighting and when places in the corners of your room will bounce the light making the room appear larger.

Mirrors
Strategically placed mirrors, especially in tight spaces throughout your room will reflect objects and light and make your space appear much larger than it really is. Don’t be afraid to use several mirrors in your room of various sizes and perhaps a standing mirror that is set against a wall.

Be transparent
Transparent furniture such as chairs, or even a kitchen table not only makes your room appear larger, it is very stylish and modern. Transparent furniture will be a functional conversation piece if added to a small space.

Look up
Hanging window dressings such as curtains higher than the window and close to the ceiling and about an inch from the floor maximizes your space and gives your ceilings an appearance of height. Likewise, hanging shelving close to the ceiling draws your eyes upward and frees coffee tables and other places of clutter which can make your space feel closed in.

Get creative with storage
Bins under your bed, hanging pot racks in the kitchen, cubbies by the door to hang jackets, umbrellas, and keys, and hanging baskets on the wall are all examples of ways to manage clutter and become more organized. As mentioned above, clutter can make your already tight space feel even smaller. Try to utilize every corner of your space by becoming as organized as possible.

Clean your windows
It sounds easy enough but its often an overlooked part of your space. If you have dirty windows it not only prevents light from coming in but will make your space feel closed in. Try to get into the habit of cleaning your windows to allow maximum light in.
