How to Stay Fit During the Holidays

Two women working out

The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, or so they say but with all the rich foods, sweets, and beverages it could also mean the heaviest time of the year. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the average American's weight increases by 0.4% over Christmas, and 0.2% over Thanksgiving. In total, this amounts to around one pound gained per holiday season for the average person. While it doesn’t sound like a lot, combined with the frigid temperatures in Indiana, your diet and exercise routine can quickly spiral out of control fast this time of year.

We get it, it’s easy to put exercise far down your list of priorities especially during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It seems like you can barely carve out time to wrap all those presents let alone hop on an elliptical but what if we told you that exercising can actually help you accomplish more throughout the day. So skip the extra cups of coffee, exercise alone boosts cardiovascular health, which allows you to have greater endurance and energy throughout the day. Luckily at Cobblestone Crossings, you don’t have to travel far to stay in shape throughout the year so no excuses!  Here are some tips to combat weight gain and stay in shape this holiday season.

Carve out time
Exercising takes a certain level of commitment no matter what time of year it is. The key is finding a time that works best for you and sticking to it. Ideally, you should consider times of day when nothing can get in the way of your exercise routine with last-minute meetings or social commitments such as early mornings.

A little planning goes a long way
Sometimes being unprepared can lead to a quick derail of your exercise routine. Consider leaving your gym clothes, water bottle, shoes, and music accessible so nothing gets in the way of going to the gym. Try preparing these things the night before if you’re going in the morning to avoid scrambling in the morning and giving you an excuse to not go.

Find a friend
Studies have found that people are far less likely to fail when it comes to an exercise routine if they pair up with a friend. A workout buddy can keep you motivated, push you past the last set of weight lifting or incline on a treadmill and it’s more fun! It’s easy to roll back into the comfort of your bed and turn off your alarm but if you know someone is counting on you, you’ll be more likely to stick with your commitment. Working out in a group setting is also a great opportunity to forge new friendships with like-minded individuals.

Everything in moderation
The holidays are known for parties and huge spreads of unhealthy options. If you are exercising on a regular basis you might feel entitled to reach for that cookie (or two or three) after all, you can burn it off tomorrow at the gym. While it might be true that you have healthy habits at the gym, try not to ruin all your hard work by indulging too often. A sugary alcoholic beverage and rich foods can add up quickly when it comes to calories. Try to make healthy choices when you’re able. This doesn’t mean you can’t indulge every once in a while, just try to limit it when you are able. If you know you are going to a party with high-calorie options consider eating healthy snacks such as fruits, veggies and nuts and water beforehand to avoid overeating the wrong things at the party.
